This 1-day course will immerse new and experienced directors in the contemporary safety paradigm where safety success is not measured by the absence of adverse events (injuries and illness), and assist directors in their understanding of where the board's efforts are best placed to govern safety beyond compliance, and cultivate a culture where people feel they matter.
Safety Beyond "Zero Harm" for Directors is a component of the Lead with Heart in the Boardroom program (see below for details).

This critical course is ideal for:
This course is designed for modern directors who want to better understand how to effectively govern safety in 2021 and beyond, and use their influence in the boardroom to not only drive human and organizational performance, but create spaces where people leave work in a better condition than when they arrived.
Whether you've been a director for days or decades, safety leadership and governance training for corporate directors has not kept pace with safety research, literature and practice which focuses far less on rules and compliance as a means of creating safe outcomes, and instead incorporates the principles of psychology, sociology and neurology. Most organizations still measure their success in creating a safe workplace by the absence of injury and illness and rely heavily on rules to drive safe outcomes; however, this is considered the "old" view of safety and reliance on this paradigm has been to the detriment of many organizational leaders.
The "new" safety paradigm recognises the inadequacy in measuring one's success by the absence of failure, and provides a platform for directors to challenge their executive's thinking and shift the discussion to a positive language where there is more opportunity to drive behaviours that emphasize risk and opportunity and improve how people feel in the organization.

You will be versed in a contemporary approach to your leadership and governance of safety where the focus of the board's efforts is looking beyond compliance and seeing people as problem to solve, and instead the focus is on understanding the wider organizational setting in which safety is continually being created and compromised and where the board has the greatest influence on outcomes.
Participants will be provided with valuable opportunities to explore critical factors that contribute to culture and appreciate how your governance can make a positive impact on the health, happiness and resilience of society.

I'm Sam McGolrick. I'm the creator of Lead with Heart in the Boardroom and my vision is to improve the health, happiness and resilience of society by improving how people feel at work.
To achieve this, my work is focussed around assisting board members in using their influence to govern organizations where people flourish as a human beings, because ultimately how we feel at work determines organizational performance and whether we go home with any discretionary energy to give back to our family, friends and community and do our part to make this world a better place.
