Safety Beyond "Zero Harm" for Directors

This 1-day course will immerse new and experienced directors in the contemporary safety paradigm where safety success is not measured by the absence of adverse events (injuries and illness), and assist directors in their understanding of where the board's efforts are best placed to govern safety beyond compliance, and cultivate a culture where people feel they matter.

Safety Beyond "Zero Harm" for Directors is a component of the Lead with Heart in the Boardroom program (see below for details).

Who Should Attend?

This critical course is ideal for:

  • New or experienced executive and non-executive directors
  • Aspiring directors
  • Senior executives and managers looking to gain a better understanding of the board's role in governing and leading safety.

This course is designed for modern directors who want to better understand how to effectively govern safety in 2021 and beyond, and use their influence in the boardroom to not only drive human and organizational performance, but create spaces where people leave work in a better condition than when they arrived.

Whether you've been a director for days or decades, safety leadership and governance training for corporate directors has not kept pace with safety research, literature and practice which focuses far less on rules and compliance as a means of creating safe outcomes, and instead incorporates the principles of psychology, sociology and neurology. Most organizations still measure their success in creating a safe workplace by the absence of injury and illness and rely heavily on rules to drive safe outcomes; however, this is considered the "old" view of safety and reliance on this paradigm has been to the detriment of many organizational leaders.

The "new" safety paradigm recognises the inadequacy in measuring one's success by the absence of failure, and provides a platform for directors to challenge their executive's thinking and shift the discussion to a positive language where there is more opportunity to drive behaviours that emphasize risk and opportunity and improve how people feel in the organization.

How Will I Benefit?

You will be versed in a contemporary approach to your leadership and governance of safety where the focus of the board's efforts is looking beyond compliance and seeing people as problem to solve, and instead the focus is on understanding the wider organizational setting in which safety is continually being created and compromised and where the board has the greatest influence on outcomes.

Participants will be provided with valuable opportunities to explore critical factors that contribute to culture and appreciate how your governance can make a positive impact on the health, happiness and resilience of society.

Upon completion of this course you will:

  • Understand the greater societal and social context that organizations now operate in and how this has an impact on health and safety outcomes.
  • Confidently differentiate between the "old view" and the "new view" of safety and demonstrate why the old view is no longer viable.
  • Appreciate how people make decisions, the motivations and behaviours of others, and the impact these have on how work gets done in your organization.
  • Understand safety leadership as it relates to a director's role on the board and behavioural strategies in your boardroom that demonstrate safety is a priority.
  • Explore opportunities to better support and challenge your executive's approach to the management of health and safety given that many executives are managing safety under the old safety paradigm.
  • Recognise unconscious biases that hinder your perception of health and safety risk and prevent you from seeing the breadth of the board's influence on outcomes.
  • Increase your influence in your boardroom and make a positive impact on the health, happiness and resilience of society.
  • Be issued a certificate that can be used towards your director continuing professional development (CPD). See HERE for details

Format

This course uses a blended approach to online learning that weaves together best practices in adult education, with creative networking opportunities and coaching support:

  • Independent online learning (up to 2 hours before event) This may include various e-learning modules, videos, webinars, podcasts, or readings. Independent learning enables participants to work through material at the time and pace that best suits their individual needs and is considered to be understood content and foundational to the upcoming classroom learning.
  • Live, classroom learning (approximately 6 hours) Classroom learning will include the application of concepts covered through independent learning as well as further concepts covered in the classroom. The live classroom sessions might include class discussions, breakout group discussions and exercises, Q&A with instructor and other experts, simulations, live interactive panel discussions, live polling and online chats.
  • Peer group exchange (up to 2 hours during the event) Course participant numbers are kept small enough to facilitate intimate participant groups. Facilitated online peer exchange will enable participants to build meaningful connections with peers, and exchange ideas and experiences that flesh out newly acquired knowledge and skills.
  • Learning sustainment tools and resources (post event) Following course completion, participants may receive follow-up resources – such as recommended reading materials, videos, webinars, portals, courses and self-directed peer exchange. These resources help course alumni maintain up-to-date knowledge and feel engaged as part of the Lead with Heart community.
  • 1-hr virtual coaching session with Samantha (post event) Following course completion, participants will have an opportunity to discuss how to apply their learning in today's governance environment and in their boardroom. This session will be a good opportunity to discuss the specific challenges and opportunities that exist in your boardroom with a health, safety and wellbeing professional.

We recommend that participants:

  • Have access to reliable, high speed internet (a minimum bandwidth of 4 Mbps for uploads and downloads).
  • Use a computer or device with a quality camera and microphone.
  • Have access to a quiet, private location for the duration of the virtual classroom session.

Instructor

I'm Sam McGolrick. I'm the creator of Lead with Heart in the Boardroom and my vision is to improve the health, happiness and resilience of society by improving how people feel at work.

To achieve this, my work is focussed around assisting board members in using their influence to govern organizations where people flourish as a human beings, because ultimately how we feel at work determines organizational performance and whether we go home with any discretionary energy to give back to our family, friends and community and do our part to make this world a better place.
